How Not To Be A Plastic Scrap Generator

March 6, 2023

When manufacturing plastic containers, several different types of bottle defects can occur in your production process. The last thing you want is to have these defective bottles delivered to your customer, which can cost you money and your customer’s trust.

Integrating a trusted leak testing system into your production is the best way to detect and reject any defective bottles, ensuring product integrity. From laser code holes to gate leaks and short shots, our reliable leak detectors are designed to catch and reject even the smallest bottle defects.

Although, how can you ensure every scraped bottle is defective?

In the video below, leak inspector expert Ed Strand, who has over 30 years of experience at ALPS Inspection, provides three tips on how to minimize good bottles in your reject bin.

3 Tips on How to Minimize Good Bottles in Your Reject Bin

1) Mind Your Production Counts

Every leak detector has counters for the number of accepted and rejected bottles. If the total number of rejected bottles is high, you’ll often find it’s a single station giving you a high false reject rate. Checking the individual station counts can help you determine which station is giving you the issue, pinpointing where you should troubleshoot.

2) Reset Your Counters

You should always reset your counters after a product change or adjustment. This is the best way to know if the adjustment made had an impact on the total number of false rejects.

3) Minimize Jams

All bottles inside a leak detector will be rejected if a jam occurs, so it’s important to minimize jams to avoid good bottles in your reject bin. Using your alarm system is the best way to take corrective action, as it helps you pinpoint exactly when and where a jam occurs and the type of jam.

*Remember, reset your counters after fixing a jam to ensure your adjustment made a difference.
